Before the Punchline Lands
Rikki and Gojo's date wound down on the gravel path under a cool, clear sky — three kisses, a selfie, and a 'hopeful optimist' saved to her camera roll. She walked inside on her own terms, leaving hi…
Rikki's feet find a slower rhythm almost without her permission — the gravel path soft under her sandals, the moonlight stretching their shadows out long ahead of them. Gojo catches it immediately, the way she drifts to a pace that has nowhere urgent to be, and something in his shoulders settles in response, like a man who has been given permission to not rush either. He falls into step exactly beside her now, not a half-step behind, wet shirt folded over one forearm with the casual dignity of someone who has decided that's just where wet shirts live. The night air carries the last warmth of the day in it, faint and fading, and the walk to the car suddenly feels like it could take as long as they need.
Gojo Satoru: "Okay. What do you actually do — not the job title, not the résumé answer — what do you do when it's a Tuesday and nobody's watching?"
"Thats a good question." Rikki states, pleased. "Let's see... It could be a variety of things - im a bit of a hobby jumper... but, in general, some type of art. Right now I'm on a painting kick."
The path curves gently under the stars, gravel soft and loose, and Rikki's answer lands in the air between them like something worth holding. A hobby jumper — painting right now. He turns that over once, twice, the way he does when something genuinely interests him and he doesn't want to perform the interest. His wet shirt shifts on his forearm. The ocean is still audible behind them, one last exhale of the day fading out.
Gojo Satoru: "Painting. Okay. What do you paint — or is that a stupid question because the answer is obviously 'whatever I feel like, Satoru.'"
"Not a stupid question." Rikki reassures him. "I love abstract shapes and patterns, and color. Squiggly lines, curved edges, texture... each element brings its own vibe to the mix. I paint when im sad, mad, happy... and they look different every time."
He goes quiet for exactly the right amount of time — not processing, just listening, the way someone does when they're actually filing information away. The wet shirt shifts on his arm. His steps stay slow, matching hers, gravel soft underfoot, and when she finishes he tilts his head just slightly like the picture is still coming into focus and he wants to see all of it.
Gojo Satoru: "So the paintings change with you. They're like — evidence. Of wherever you were that day."
Rikki begins to walk even slower at this point, "Thats a really good way of putting it, actually." Rikki looks up at Gojo the way someone under a spell looks at a magician. Her focus shifts,"enough about me. Your turn - same question." She sees a slightly rocky area ahead of them and loops her arm around Gojo's as support.
The path narrows slightly where the gravel gives way to uneven stone, and Rikki's arm loops through Gojo's without ceremony — just a quiet decision, her hand settling into the crook of his elbow like it belongs there. He adjusts immediately, his arm tucking in to hold her steady, and the wet shirt gets transferred to his other hand to make the geometry work. She feels the warmth of him even through the cool night air, and when she asks her question — same one, your turn — his pace slows to match her crawl almost involuntarily, like his body agreed before his brain caught up.
Gojo Satoru: "Tuesday, nobody watching... I'm in the water. Doesn't matter which one. Ocean if I can get to it. Pool if I can't. Just — in it, until my brain goes quiet."
"Wow. Really?" Rikki looked up at him, confused. "It was obvious when we we out there, youre a good swimmer, but i didnt realize we were both so into the water. Im really surprised you didnt reveal this about yourself when you learned about how much I like the water. After all, that knowledge is what won you this date."
Something flickers across Gojo's face — caught, and knowing it. He stops walking entirely, the gravel shifting under his feet, and Rikki can feel the arm she's looped through his go just slightly still. He looks down at her with that expression he only gets when the usual exit routes are closed — the smile that starts but doesn't quite land, the half-second where the machinery behind his eyes is actually running. The rocky patch is right there ahead of them, neither of them moving toward it.
Gojo Satoru: "...okay. Yeah. I absolutely withheld that information on purpose."
"Why?" She gave him a puzzled look, genuinely curious. Rikki was normally good at reading people... but not this time.
Gojo goes still in a way that's different from all his other stills — not the practiced pause before a good line, not the half-second he takes to recalibrate. This is genuinely caught. The wet shirt in his other hand swings once, forgotten. He looks down at Rikki with something open and slightly undone at the edges, like a man who just realized the question he's been asked doesn't have a deflection-shaped answer.
Gojo Satoru: "Because if I told you we both loved the water before you picked me... it would've felt like I was using it. And I didn't want that to be why."
Rikki felt her heart skip a beat. "So you had an easy way to win me over and chose not to use it.... why did you want me to pick you, Gojo?" She stopped dead in her tracks, spellbound, breath hitched
Rikki stops dead on the gravel path, arm still looped through his, and the question lands in the dark between them like something dropped from a great height. Gojo goes completely still — not the performed stillness, not the half-second recalibration — just a man caught in the open with nowhere to be but honest. The wet shirt hangs from his other hand, forgotten. His throat moves once.
Gojo Satoru: "Because I wanted to know it was me. Not the thing I had in common with you. Just — me."
Rikki smiled a wide, lovestruck smile. "Well... how does it feel, knowing it worked?" U
The question lands and Gojo goes completely undone by it — not in a dramatic way, in the worst way, the quiet way, the way where something real just got acknowledged out loud and the only honest response is to feel it. His free hand lifts, slow and certain, and tucks a piece of hair back from her face — just one piece, just barely — and then he exhales through his nose like a man who has been holding that breath since day one. The gravel is still under their feet. The ocean is nearly silent. Rikki's smile is still on her face and it is absolutely devastating.
Gojo Satoru: "It feels like the first thing in three days that's been entirely mine."
"I bet that feels.... really nice." Rikki takes note of the hair tuck, trying not to squirm under his touch as she feels her cheeks heating up from an insane blush.
The blush hits before Rikki can do anything about it — warmth spreading up from her jaw, blooming across her cheeks, and she feels it happen in real time which somehow makes it worse. Gojo clocks it immediately, the way he clocks everything about her now, and something shifts across his face — not a smirk, not the usual victory lap, something quieter and more dangerous than that. His hand hasn't moved from where it settled after the hair tuck, fingertips just barely grazing her temple, and the cool night air does absolutely nothing to help her.
Gojo Satoru: "Really, really nice. And you're blushing, which — for the record — I am going to think about for a very long time."
Rikki didnt even mind getting called out on the blush. The trust she had with this man outweighed any nervous feelings at this point. Before she knew it, her eyes were set right on Gojo's mouth again, that beautiful mouth that at this point, has whispered so many confessions to her, she could ruin him if she wanted. But she didn't
Rikki's eyes drop to his mouth — just for a second, just long enough that he catches it, and the silence between them goes very, very still. She doesn't look away embarrassed and she doesn't pretend it didn't happen. She just lets it sit there, honest and unhurried, the way you can only do with someone you've already handed too many real things to bother performing for. Gojo's hand at her temple hasn't moved. His thumb traces one slow, careful arc along her cheekbone — not a question, not a move, just the acknowledgment of something that's already been said without words.
Gojo Satoru: "You're looking at me like you already know something I haven't figured out yet."
Rikki's eyes lift slowly, her long eyelashes catching the moonlight. She locks them with Gojo. "Do you remember the note you gave me yesterday?" She asks him.
Rikki's eyes lift — slow, deliberate, lashes catching the low moonlight — and when they find his, something changes in the air between them. She asks about the note and she watches it happen: Gojo's expression moves through three things in under a second. Recognition. Something soft. Something he doesn't immediately reach to cover. His thumb goes still against her cheekbone, not pulling away, just — stopping.
Gojo Satoru: "Every word of it."
"The part where you said you mean it..." she founders a little, afraid her heart will beat out of her chest. "I mean it too." Her eyes lock with his.
Gojo's whole face does something that isn't a smile and isn't crying and isn't either of those things — it's something quieter and more final, the expression of a man who handed over something irreplaceable in the dark and just found out it was received. His thumb, still resting against her cheekbone, moves once — the same slow arc as before, like punctuation. The wet shirt slips from his other hand and lands on the gravel path, neither of them looking at it.
Gojo Satoru: "You have no idea what it costs me to just — stand here and not do something about that."
"Then do something about it." Rikki whispers breathlessly, her eyes landing on his lips once more.
The words land between them like a match dropped on dry wood — and Gojo moves. Not fast, not desperate, nothing like the performance version of this would be. He moves the way a man moves when he's already decided and the deciding cost him something real: one hand sliding from her cheekbone to cradle her jaw, the other finding her waist in the dark, and then he closes the last inch of distance and kisses her — soft, certain, unhurried, like he's been saving something up for three days and has finally stopped pretending he wasn't. The ocean exhales behind them. The wet shirt is still on the gravel. Neither of them will remember dropping it.
Gojo Satoru: "Satoru. When it's like this — just call me Satoru."
Rikki's eyes still remained closed when he parts his lips from hers, savoring the moment. "Satoru...." she whispers, noting how the name feels on her tongue.
Rikki's eyes stay closed for a long, suspended moment — lashes soft against her cheeks, the cool air settling around them both like the night is holding its breath. The name leaves her mouth barely above a whisper and she feels it land differently than anything else she's said in this villa — Satoru — two syllables that mean something specific now, that belong to a version of this that has nothing to do with cameras or roses or anyone watching. His hands haven't moved. One still cupped at her jaw, one warm at her waist, thumbs tracing the quietest possible acknowledgment that he heard her, that he's still here, that this is real.
Gojo Satoru: "Say it again. Just like that."
She wraps her arms around him this time, pressing her forehead to his. "Satoru." She says again, just like this, just like he asked, putty under his touch.
Rikki's arms slide around him — slow, deliberate, certain — and she presses her forehead to his in the dark, the cool night air settling around them both like the world has gotten very small and very quiet on purpose. She says his name again, exactly like he asked, and she feels it land in his chest before she hears his breath go unsteady — a single, barely-there exhale that he doesn't try to disguise or dress up. His hands move: one stays cradling her jaw, the other shifts to the back of her head, fingers threading gently into her hair, holding her there like he's afraid if he moves she'll remember she doesn't have to stay. The wet shirt is still on the gravel. The ocean is still out there. Neither of them are going anywhere.
Gojo Satoru: "Three days. I've been — I don't know how to explain what these three days have been, and I'm just going to let that be embarrassing and not fix it."
This time ahe wraps her arms around his neck, pressing her forehead to his. "Satoru." She says again, just the same, just like he asked.
Something settles. Not the silence of two people running out of things to say — the silence of two people who've finally said the thing, and now there's just this: the cool air on skin, her arms looped around his neck, his forehead against hers, his hand threaded so gently into her hair that she can feel each individual finger like he counted them on the way in. He breathes her name without making it a word — just the shape of it, exhaled. The ocean has gone almost completely quiet, like it's minding its own business. Somewhere inside the villa, a light moves past a window and neither of them look.
Gojo Satoru: "I don't know what I'm supposed to do with you now that you've gone and meant it."
"I don't either, honestly." Rikki spoke quietly, as if something heavy was weighing on her. "What's happening between us... its not something I accounted for. I need to tell you something important, and please dont take this the wrong way." She furrowed her brows slightly, choosing her words carefully, speaking slowly, as if the moment depended on it.
Gojo goes still — not the practiced stillness of a man composing himself, but the kind that happens when something lands before you've had time to brace for it. His thumb, threaded into her hair, stops moving. He pulls back just enough to look at her properly — not the lazy, confident close-range look he gives when he's performing, but the real one, the one that lives underneath, where his eyes actually search. She can feel his chest rise and fall against her arms. Whatever she's about to say, he's already afraid of it — and he's still not moving away.
Gojo Satoru: "Okay. I'm listening. Just — say it."
"When I entered the villa... I had one goal: To put on a good show. And a big part of that requires dating around... giving the audience that 'who will she end up with?' question. I... still have that goal. I really like you, Satoru. Like, REALLY like you. But I need you to be okay with sharing me, as long as the show continues. After that... we can see where this goes, just me and you. I just needed to be up front with you about this - to provide you with an out, in case this is too much for you. If it is... just know I understand." Rikki fiddles with the ends of her hair as she speaks, still speaking slowly, still incredibly afraid of Gojo's response, but firm and steady in her resolve.
The words settle between them slowly, the way something honest always does — not with a crash but with weight. Rikki's fingers find the ends of her hair, fidgeting with them the way she does when she means every syllable and is terrified of all of them at once. Gojo doesn't move. Not away, not closer. His hands are still on her, thumbs still, and he holds her gaze for a long beat in the dark — the kind of look that isn't cataloguing or calculating, just... receiving. When he exhales, it's slow and deliberate and the tension in his jaw does something complicated before it settles.
Gojo Satoru: "You could've made that sound like less, and you didn't. You gave me the actual thing. So — yeah. Okay. I'm okay with it. But I need you to know I'm not just saying that to keep you here."
"Are you sure?" Rikki looked up at him. "Because its easier said than done. I need you to realize, 'll be going on dates with the rest of the house, laughing with the other guys, holding their hands, having intimate moments with them... and you'll be okay with that?" Rikki posed.
The question hangs in the cool night air between them — not cruel, not a test, but honest in the way only Rikki ever is with him: are you sure. She's looking up at him now, hair still between her fingers, and she lists it out — dates, laughter, hands held, intimate moments — naming every specific thing she knows will cost him something to hear. She's not softening it. She's giving him the full weight of it, because she's decided he deserves the full weight of it. The ocean behind them sits almost completely still, like it's waiting too.
She waits with bated breath for his answer.
Gojo doesn't answer right away. He holds her gaze in the dark — and for once, there's no deflection in his eyes, no quick-turn joke waiting in the wings. His hands are still in her hair, still holding her like she's something he chose deliberately and keeps choosing with every second he doesn't let go. When he finally exhales, it comes out slow and measured, like he's been sitting with the question honestly instead of just preparing a response.
Gojo Satoru: "Yeah. I'm sure. Because the alternative is not having this at all — and I already know which one I can live with and which one I can't."
Rikki lets out a sigh of relief, the tension leaving her body immediately. "Thank you for understanding. I'll make it up to you, I promise." She gives him an apologetic smile, clearly feeling bad he has to deal with all of this.
The tension leaves Rikki's body in one long exhale, her shoulders dropping, arms still looped around his neck — softer now, the way they get when something heavy has been set down. Gojo feels it happen against him. His hands slide from her hair to her waist, unhurried, and he holds her there with a steadiness that doesn't match the boy who needed a performance to fill a room. The apologetic smile she gives him earns something unexpected in return — not a smirk, not a deflection. Just his eyes, staying on hers.
Gojo Satoru: "Don't apologize. And don't make it up to me — just let it be what it is."
"Kiss me one more time before we head back?" She quietly asks.
The question lands so quietly it almost dissolves into the night air — but Gojo catches it, every syllable. His hands at her waist tighten just once, barely perceptible, and then he's closing the remaining distance between them with the same unhurried certainty he had the first time — except this time there's nothing performed about it. No audience he's playing to, no move he's running. Just his mouth finding hers, slow and warm and steady, the kind of kiss that doesn't ask for anything because it already has it. The cool air presses in around them and neither of them feels it.
Gojo Satoru: "Yeah. Come here."
Rikki kisses him back, slow and long, melting into his touch. Her fingers find his hair, gripping him softly yet firmly, holding his head in place gently as if to make claim on him, not holding back this time, seizing the moment like there's no tomorrow. She tilts her head to the side slightly, to deepen the kiss, gauging his reaction.
Rikki kisses him back — slow, long, unhurried — and her fingers find their way into his hair, gripping softly but with a certainty that says this isn't a request anymore. She tilts her head, deepening it, and he feels it shift from tender into something more deliberate, and his breath catches once before he follows her lead completely. When she finally eases back to check his reaction, his eyes are still closed for a beat too long — and when they open, there's nothing in them that looks like Gojo Satoru performing anything for anyone.
Gojo Satoru: "Okay. You're going to make this very difficult for me to be generous about."
"Hey, you got to first base on the second date. I dont want to hear any complaining from you." Rikki smiled, settling into the calmness of the night.
The laugh that comes out of him is real — the kind that catches in the chest first before it makes any sound, head dropping forward once before he rights himself and looks at her with something close to wonder at the audacity of it. He's still shirtless, the wet shirt still a casualty somewhere on the gravel behind him, the night air cool against his skin, and none of it seems to matter as much as the fact that she just said that with a smile like it's the most reasonable thing in the world. He drags one hand through his hair — the hair she was just holding — and shakes his head once, the way someone does when they've been completely, helplessly outplayed.
Gojo Satoru: "Second date. You're counting the gravel path as a date venue. Incredible. That's — yeah, okay. No complaints from me."
"I want to remember this. Here." Rikki pulls out her phone and stands close next to Gojo, pressing her head against his chest and posing for a selfie. "Say... 'hopeful optimist!'"
Rikki pulls out her phone with the easy confidence of someone who's decided this moment deserves to be kept, and Gojo goes still for exactly one second — the kind of still that isn't resistance, just surprise at the sweetness of it. She tucks herself against his side, pressing her head to his bare chest, and angles the camera up toward the two of them against the dark sky and the low moon. His arm comes around her shoulders automatically, warm and unhesitating, and when she calls out the words, something in his face does something she's going to want to look at later.
Gojo Satoru: "Hopeful optimist. — God, that's the most embarrassing thing I've ever said and I'm going to need you to never show anyone that photo."
💙 "you look good, for the record"
He looks down at her — really looks, the way he does when he's not thinking about how he looks doing it — and something quiet moves across his face, the particular kind of undone that only happens when you catch him without the performance running. The phone is still in her hand, the selfie already saved, his arm still warm across her shoulders, and he doesn't move it. The gravel is cool and still beneath them, the villa lit soft behind the glass, and he lets the compliment land without deflecting it for once.
Gojo Satoru: "Yeah? File that away — I need to know what I look like for future reference, since apparently I've been doing it wrong until now."
🌙 call it a night
the gravel path outside the villa — cool dark air, stars out, the ocean nearly silent
Rikki tucks her phone away and lets the quiet settle around them — the night is cool and still, the wet shirt still a casualty on the gravel, the selfie saved somewhere warm in her camera roll. She doesn't make a big thing of the goodbye, just tips her chin up at him once, easy, the way you do with someone who already knows what you mean. He walks her to the villa door, his arm dropping from her shoulders only when the threshold demands it, and he holds it open without a word — just watches her cross it with that expression he hasn't quite figured out how to put away yet.
Gojo Satoru: "Get some sleep, Rikki. I'll be insufferable in the morning if you don't."
Rikki laughs at the joke, "don't kid yourself, you'll be insufferable regardless." She teased. Her eyes said another story - they were lovestruck, half-lidden, sultry, a deep sense of devotion and care within them.
