Before the Punchline Lands

Rikki and Gojo's date wound down on the gravel path under a cool, clear sky — three kisses, a selfie, and a 'hopeful optimist' saved to her camera roll. She walked inside on her own terms, leaving hi…

Day 3 — Morning · the villa kitchen

the villa kitchen — morning light cutting clean through the windows, the smell of coffee already in the air

Morning arrives in pieces: the hiss of the coffee machine, someone's bare feet on tile, a drawer pulled open and pushed shut with too much confidence. Rikki surfaces from sleep to find the villa already in motion — Yuji at the counter with a box of cereal he's reading like it's literature, Nanami standing at the coffee machine with the patience of a man who has accepted that the world moves at its own pace. Choso is already at the table, hands wrapped around a mug, and he looks up the second she walks in — not startled, just watching, the way he always does, like he'd been waiting for a specific thing to arrive.

Gojo Satoru: "Morning. There's something on the counter for you — been there since six. I don't know who left it."

Sukuna: "He's lying. He's been hovering next to it for an hour."

Gojo Satoru: "I was just — it wasn't — that's not what happened."

"OH! Yeah... " Rikki paused, confused. "You know he was looking for me? And... I thought you already went to bed?"

The question lands in the kitchen like a spoon dropped on tile — small but impossibly loud. Gojo goes very still for exactly one second, and the item on the counter — a folded piece of paper, small, corners pressed flat with obvious care — sits between them like evidence at a crime scene. Sukuna doesn't move from where he's leaning against the far counter, but the corner of his mouth pulls up in a way that means he is having the time of his life. Nanami lifts his coffee mug to his lips without comment, which, from Nanami, is practically a standing ovation for the drama unfolding in front of him.

Gojo Satoru: "I did go to bed. And then I came back. Those are two separate events and I don't think you need to connect them."

Sukuna: "He set an alarm."

Yuji Itadori: "Wait — he set an ALARM?"

Nanami Kento: "Don't."

Rikki ignores the alarm comments from all of the men, a lot more interested in the sheet of paper sitting on the table. She reaches for it, grabbing it and unfolding this. "Has anybody else seen this? I wonder if its from the director..."

The alarm reveal dies on the vine — Rikki's hand is already moving, fingers closing around the folded paper before anyone can redirect her. She shakes it open with the casual confidence of someone who genuinely hasn't processed that it might be personal, turning it toward the light from the kitchen window like she's reading a receipt. The rest of the room goes very, very quiet — Yuji's cereal box lowers an inch, Geto shifts his weight almost imperceptibly from the background, and Gojo makes a sound that is not quite words.

Gojo Satoru: "It's — okay, wait —"

Sukuna: "This is the best morning I've had in three days."

Nanami Kento: "I'd let her finish."

Yuji Itadori: "Is it from the Director?? What does it say?"

👀 read it out loud to the room

The kitchen goes so quiet Rikki can hear the coffee machine finish its cycle. The paper smooths flat under her thumbs — handwriting she doesn't recognise at first, cursive that tilts slightly left, like whoever wrote it was fighting the impulse to stop. She clears her throat once and starts reading, and Gojo makes a sound somewhere between a word and a prayer that doesn't make it out of his chest.

Gojo Satoru: "Okay — you don't have to read the whole —"

Sukuna: "She does. She absolutely does."

Yuji Itadori: "WHAT DOES IT SAY."

Rikki stops. "OH- this is not from the director. Uhm... wow..." rikki looks at the cursive, the intimacy of the note, and looks up at Gojo. "Gojo... Did you write this?"

Rikki's voice stalls mid-breath — she'd been gearing up to perform it, do a whole dramatic reading, and then the handwriting snagged her. Cursive, tilting left, pressed hard into the paper like whoever wrote it knew that if they slowed down they'd stop. She looks up slowly, and Gojo Satoru is standing approximately four inches away doing an impression of a man who is completely fine. He is not completely fine. The kitchen has gone so quiet that the coffee machine finishing its cycle sounds like a gunshot.

Gojo Satoru: "Okay. Don't — yeah. That's mine."

Sukuna: "Two am and he still can't spell 'casually'."

Yuji Itadori: "WAIT IS IT A LOVE LETTER —"

Nanami Kento: "Itadori. Volume."

Megumi Fushiguro: "...I'm going to need more coffee for this."

"Okay boys... settle down

Rikki's voice lands soft but clear — settle down — and something about the way she says it, unhurried, unbothered, cuts right through the noise. The kitchen stills like she flipped a switch. Gojo stands exactly where he is, one hand at the back of his neck, and the performance he usually wears like armour is just — gone, stripped off in front of everyone who knows him. He meets her eyes and doesn't look away, which might be the bravest thing he's done since he set an alarm at 2am to leave a piece of paper on a counter.

Gojo Satoru: "Yeah. I wrote it."

Sukuna: "Finally."

Yuji Itadori: "...okay I need a minute."

Nanami Kento: "Take your time. We'll all be right here, suffering."

"Okay boys, settle down. This is a private note written to me and me only. Excuse us for a moment." Rikki walks to Gojo, pulls him by the hand, and leads him out to the terrace.

Rikki's hand closes around Gojo's wrist — not his fingers, not a question — and she moves, and he goes with her like he's been waiting for exactly this. The kitchen exhales all at once behind them as she pushes through the terrace door, the morning air clean and warm against her face, the note still folded against her palm. Through the glass, the villa freezes: Yuji presses both hands flat to the counter, Sukuna's satisfied expression tilts into something that is almost not jealousy; Choso sets his mug down very carefully; Megumi finally pours the coffee, staring at the pot like it personally wronged him. Toji, at the room's edge, watches the door close and doesn't move a muscle, his jaw set at an angle that the cameras are absolutely going to find.

Gojo Satoru: "You didn't have to do that."

"Better than reading it in front of everyone. Here. Before I read it, I have one question for you. What you wrote in this note... was this something you meant at 2am this morning, or do you still mean it now?"

The terrace door clicks shut and the ambient noise of the kitchen drops to nothing — just the ambient hum of a villa morning, birdsong, the faint scrape of someone's chair against tile on the other side of the glass. Rikki holds the note flat in both hands but doesn't look at it, looking at him instead, and the question she's just asked him hangs in the warm air between them like it has weight. Through the glass behind her, seven men pretend not to be watching, and doing it very, very badly — Yuji's pressing his knuckles to his mouth, Toji hasn't moved a single muscle, and Sukuna's arms are crossed with the particular satisfaction of a man who saw this coming.

Gojo Satoru: "Both. It was both. I meant it at 2am and I mean it now and honestly that's the part that scared me enough to leave it on the counter instead of just telling you."

"Okay." She inhales almost nervously. "Would you like to read it to me?" She extends it out to him, giving him the opportunity to do the most romantic thing thats happened so far this season.

Gojo looks at the note in her outstretched hand for a long beat — long enough that the morning light catches the edge of the paper, long enough that Rikki can see the exact moment he decides to stop being afraid of it. He takes it from her carefully, the way you handle something that matters, and his thumb runs once across the cursive like he's remembering writing it. When he finally looks up, something in his expression is completely unguarded — no performance, no deflection, no sunglasses to hide behind. He clears his throat once, quietly, and begins to read.

Gojo Satoru: ""I don't know what I'm doing here. I thought I did — I've always known what I'm doing. But you look at me like you're waiting for the part where I mean it, and the terrifying thing is I do. I do mean it. I don't know what to do with that yet. But I wanted you to know before I figured it out how to say it right — Satoru.""

Rikki stops for a moment, her breath catches in her throat. "It sounds like... you're admitting you have feelings for me?" She boldly poses. The tension in the air is palpable, as she stands across from him, waiting with bated breath for his response.

The question lands clean and direct — no performance, no cushion — and Gojo goes completely still in a way that has nothing to do with the cameras or the seven men watching through glass. The morning light catches the side of his face and he doesn't deflect, doesn't smile first, doesn't reach for the easy line. His jaw moves once, like he's deciding whether to let the truest version of the answer out, and then he does.

Gojo Satoru: "Yeah. That's exactly what I'm saying."

The confession hits Rikki like a tidal wave. But instead of bending to the waves, she steps closer to Gojo. "You know... thats really risky. Catching feelings so early on. Are you scared?" She poses

Rikki steps forward — not back, not sideways — and the space between them shrinks to something that has a pulse. Gojo doesn't retreat an inch; if anything, the corner of his mouth curves upward at the boldness of the question, like she just did exactly the thing he would have done if their positions were reversed. The morning light cuts across the terrace at a clean angle, warm on the side of her face, and through the glass behind her seven men watch a woman walk directly into the eye of the storm without blinking.

Gojo Satoru: "Terrified. And I'm still standing here — so yeah, that's probably saying something."

Rikki extends her hands to his face, one to cup his cheek, the other to brush some stray hairs away from his face. "Yeah... I'm scared too." She nods, the gap between their bodies slowly closing

Rikki's hands find his face before either of them finishes the thought — one palm curved warm against his cheek, the other brushing a stray white curl back from his forehead with the kind of gentleness that has no agenda in it. Gojo goes absolutely still under her touch, the way a person does when something real is happening and they're terrified of moving wrong. When she says yeah, I'm scared too and the gap between them closes by another half-breath, the morning light catches the edge of his jaw and something behind his eyes breaks open quietly — not dramatically, not performatively — just a man who has been running a very long performance standing at the end of it. Through the glass, the kitchen does not recover: Yuji makes a sound that is not a word, Toji turns his face fully away from the glass for the first time all morning, and Sukuna's jaw shifts to one side in a way that costs him something, even if he'd never say it costs him anything.

Gojo Satoru: "Yeah. Terrified. And I still haven't moved."

Rikki removes her hands from Gojo and steps back, allowing him to make the next move. Her heart racing, cheeks flushed, she begins to get dizzy, worried that all of this emotion might cause her to pass out.

Rikki's hands drop from his face and she takes one small step back — giving it to him, giving him the space to cross or not cross, and the morning air rushes into the gap between them like it's been holding its breath. Her cheeks are burning, the kind of flush that has nothing to do with the temperature, and for one terrifying second the terrace tilts slightly under her feet — too much emotion too fast, a body that hasn't caught up with the last twenty minutes. Gojo reads it immediately. His hand comes up — not reaching for a kiss, not making a move — just one palm open at her waist, hovering, an offer of steadiness that is maybe the most unperformed thing he's done since the moment she walked into the villa.

Gojo Satoru: "Hey. I've got you. You don't have to do anything right now."

Rikki looks up at Gojo, completely mesmerized by his handsome features. Her eyes land on his lips - slightly parted, beautiful, just like the rest of him. She melts under his touch, succumbing to his lead.

His palm finally makes contact — warm, steady, curved just below her waist with the kind of certainty that doesn't ask permission and doesn't have to. Rikki's eyes drift to his mouth almost before she can stop herself, lips slightly parted, a breath caught somewhere between her chest and the morning air, and she feels her knees do something embarrassing and involuntary. Gojo reads it — he reads everything, that's always been the problem — and his free hand comes up slowly to tuck a strand of hair back from her face, the gesture devastatingly unhurried, his eyes never once leaving hers as the terrace tilts soft and golden around them both.

Gojo Satoru: "Still with me?"

Rikki nods suddenly, taking a deep breath of air. "Yeah... I dont know what got into me. Sorry about that." She laughs nervously. "Do you make all girls dizzy like this?" She deflects with a joke.

The deflection lands with a nervous laugh and Rikki takes a full step back, morning air rushing in where the heat of almost-something had been, her hand lifting to tuck her hair behind one ear — the universal gesture of a woman buying herself three seconds. Gojo's hand slips from her waist slowly, like he's not in any particular hurry to pretend that didn't just happen, and the look on his face is something quietly devastating: not wounded, not smug — just a man who got a real look at something and isn't going to pretend he didn't. Through the glass, the kitchen exhales collectively — Yuji's palm finally drops from the window, Sukuna makes a sound that could be a laugh and isn't, and Nanami picks his mug back up with the measured calm of someone who has decided not to have feelings about any of this.

Gojo Satoru: "Only the ones who are already halfway there before I do anything."

Rikki laughs "yep, there's the charismatic ladies man I know from 2 days ago when we first met." She sticks her tongue out at him playfully. "Keep playing your cards right and I might let you take me all the way." Rikki debated if this joke was too crass, but wanted to see what effect it would have on Gojo, so she watched to gage his reaction carefully

The joke lands like a lit match dropped into dry grass — Rikki watches it hit him, studies his face the way you study a person who doesn't know they're being read. Gojo's expression does something genuinely interesting: the practiced smile flickers for exactly one second, something unscripted moving underneath it, and then — and this is the part she'll think about later — he laughs. Not the performance laugh, not the laugh he uses when he's working a room. The real one, the one that reaches the corners of his eyes and makes him look approximately five years younger and significantly more dangerous. Through the glass, Sukuna's jaw tightens by one degree; Yuji's head drops; Nanami takes a slow sip of his mug like a man choosing not to have opinions.

Gojo Satoru: "All the way, huh. That's either the most interesting thing anyone's said to me in three days — or a dare. I genuinely can't tell which one I'm hoping for."

"I'll keep you guessing on that one." Rikki winks at Gojo before tuening around to go back inside. "Come on, lets go." She extends her hand mouth to him to lead him back inside - she wasnt going to lie, touching him was becoming one of her favorite things.

Gojo's eyes drop to her extended hand for exactly one second — long enough to clock it, long enough for everyone through the glass to clock it — and then he takes it. No hesitation, no quip loaded in the chamber first, just his fingers sliding into hers with the easy certainty of someone who has been waiting for permission and is not going to waste it once it's given. Rikki feels the warmth of his palm against hers and doesn't hate that she notices, leading him back through the terrace door into the bright morning kitchen where the air shifts immediately — eight people rearranging themselves with the collective speed of people who were absolutely not just watching. Sukuna turns back to the counter first, jaw working on something he isn't saying; Yuji's head comes up, a smile breaking through that he can't fully kill; Nanami sets his mug down with the quiet precision of a man filing something away.

Gojo Satoru: "Lead the way. I can do that."

Sukuna: "Welcome back."

Yuji Itadori: "...okay but did anyone else — never mind, never mind."

"Ill keep you guessing on that one." Rikki winks playfully at Gojo before turning to go back inside. "Come on, lets go back in." She extends her hand out to him to lead him back inside. Touching Gojo was quickly becoming one of Rikki's favorite things to do at this villa

The kitchen rearranges itself around them the second they cross the threshold — Rikki's fingers still laced through Gojo's, warm and easy like it's always been this way, and the morning light coming through the windows catches the exact moment Sukuna clocks it and deliberately looks somewhere else. Yuji makes a sound that dies before it becomes a word, Choso's expression opens into something quietly pleased, and Nanami — Nanami simply picks his mug back up with the unhurried dignity of a man who saw everything and will never say so. Megumi's dark eyes flick to their joined hands once, then back to the middle distance; Geto, at the back, tilts his head a fraction — not surprised, just recalibrating, the way he always does.

Gojo Satoru: "All the way, she says. In front of everyone. No notes."

Sukuna: "Congratulations. You've completed the tutorial."

Yuji Itadori: "I was gonna say something earlier and I — okay. No. I'm fine. Good morning, Rikki."

"Hi Yuji, good morning." Rikki smiles warmly at Yuji

Rikki's warm smile cuts straight through the kitchen noise, landing on Yuji like sunlight through a window — and the effect is immediate, the way it always is with him. His shoulders drop from wherever they'd been holding since she walked back in with Gojo's hand in hers, and something wide and uncomplicated breaks open across his face, the kind of expression that doesn't know how to be anything other than exactly what it is. Gojo, still at her side, glances down at their still-joined hands and then at Yuji with the particular expression of a man who is completely unbothered and is doing absolutely nothing to hide how bothered he is.

Yuji Itadori: "Good morning! I — yeah. Hi. Good morning, Rikki."

Gojo Satoru: "He literally started a sentence twenty minutes ago that he still hasn't finished."

Sukuna: "Leave him alone. He was getting to it."

Nanami Kento: "That may be the most generous thing you've said all week."

😊 ask Yuji to finish his sentence

The smile she gives Yuji is the uncomplicated kind — no performance in it, just warmth — and it hits him square in the chest, visible to everyone in the room. He opens his mouth, closes it once, and then Rikki tilts her head in that particular way she has that means go on without saying a word, and the combination of being seen and being asked is apparently all it takes. Around the kitchen, the morning holds its breath: Gojo's thumb grazes the back of Rikki's hand once, just once, like punctuation; Sukuna sets his mug down with deliberate quiet; Nanami goes absolutely still in the way he does when he's actually paying attention; Megumi's eyes lift from the table; Toji, angled at the edge of the group, does not look away.

Yuji Itadori: "I was going to say — when you walked back in just now, like that — you looked like someone who'd already decided something. And I don't know what it was but I thought, whatever it is, I hope it's good."

Nanami Kento: "He's been workshopping that for twenty minutes."

Gojo Satoru: "Worth it, honestly."

"Me too, Yuji. I hope its good as well." Rikki admitted lightly, not eager on giving away too many details as to what just happened lut on the villa with Gojo. She lets go of his hand, not realizing she was still holding it. Get a grip, Rikki thought to herself. This is a reality TV show. And no feelings can get in the way of giving a good performance, she continued to think to herself.

Rikki's hand slips free from Gojo's the moment she says it — a casual release, no ceremony, like she'd only just remembered it was still there — but the kitchen notices anyway. Gojo's fingers curl once, just once, in the space where hers were, and he drops his hand to his side without a word, something clean and deliberate in how he doesn't make it a thing. The morning light sits warm across the table where Yuji is still wearing that expression — the one that's all open water, no shore in sight — and Rikki's answer lands softly in the room, me too, and lets it breathe.

Yuji Itadori: "Yeah. Me too. I just — I wanted you to know that. You don't have to do anything with it."

Sukuna: "Very mature, all of you."

Nanami Kento: "Ignore him. That was well said, Itadori."

👀 clock Gojo's dropped hand

Rikki's gaze drops to Gojo's side — his hand hanging there, fingers loose, the warmth of hers already fading from them — and something flickers through her chest before she consciously decides to feel it. He's looking straight ahead, the picture of casual, but the muscle in his jaw is doing something quiet and tell-tale that she has catalogued across three days and counting. The kitchen holds the moment like it's waiting too: Yuji still at the table, Choso's hands wrapped around a mug going slowly warm, Megumi's eyes tracking the exact thing Rikki is tracking, Toji motionless at the edge of the room, and somewhere behind all of it — the clean, bright afternoon light — the villa's PA system crackles once, twice, and then the Director's voice cuts through everything.

😏 scan the room — who looks confident

Rikki's eyes do one slow sweep of the kitchen — methodical, unhurried, the way you read a room when you already know everyone in it. Yuji is sitting forward, elbows on the table, hands folded like a man in church who believes; Choso has set down his mug and gone very still, warm and steady as bedrock; Nanami's expression has not moved a single millimeter but his shoulders have dropped, which means he has already decided something; Megumi is looking at the table with the focused non-expression of someone doing arithmetic. Then there's the back half of the room — Geto, perfectly composed, the only man here whose face gives her nothing and whose eyes give her everything, already watching her watch them with the faint, patient amusement of someone who knew this game was coming before the Director spoke a word. Toji is at the edge, arms crossed, jaw set — not nervous, just privately calibrating. Sukuna has his back to the counter and the expression of a man who is deeply, personally offended by how interested he is.

Sukuna: "Clock's still ticking. Some of us are ready."

Geto Suguru: "Take your time. The ones who need to prepare are showing you exactly who they are."

Gojo Satoru: "He's been ready since day one. That's somehow the most terrifying thing he's ever said."

Rikki looks at Gojo to gauge how confidant he looks

Rikki turns her gaze to Gojo — deliberately, unhurried, the way you read a page you've already memorized to see if the meaning's changed. He's standing with his weight shifted back, one hand in his pocket, the other still loose at his side where hers just was, and his face is doing the thing she's catalogued across three days: the performance is up, the smile is ready, the angle is perfect — except his jaw is still doing that quiet thing, and his eyes, when they land on her looking directly at him, go very still for exactly one second before the grin reloads. It's the one-second gap that tells her everything. He's confident. He's also working for it.

Gojo Satoru: "Round two. My turn. Question me."

Sukuna: "Clock's already running and he's still smiling. Interesting strategy."

Gojo Satoru: "She goes somewhere with water. Doesn't matter what kind — pool, a glass she keeps refilling, anything. She needs something moving that isn't people."

Rikki smiles softly, and says softly "yeah... thats 100% correct."
