Before the Punchline Lands

Rikki and Gojo's date wound down on the gravel path under a cool, clear sky — three kisses, a selfie, and a 'hopeful optimist' saved to her camera roll. She walked inside on her own terms, leaving hi…

The word lands — good — and something in the room breathes out all the way, like a house finally settling on its foundation. Rikki holds Gojo's gaze one beat longer, lets it mean what it means, and then turns cleanly toward the Director. She can still feel him behind her right shoulder — the warmth of it, the steadiness, the fact that he is standing exactly where he was and not performing a single inch of it. The Director steps forward into the center of the room, and every face turns — Choso with his hands loose in his lap, Nanami's spine a quiet rod of composure, Yuji leaning forward like gravity is pulling him toward whatever comes next, Toji still and uncrossed at the back wall, Megumi clear-eyed and at rest — and Geto, directly across, already watching Rikki when the Director clears his throat, hands still clasped behind his back, the knowing tilt in the corner of his mouth the most patient thing in the room.

"Gojo Satoru." She states again

The name lands a second time and it doesn't echo — it settles. Rikki says it clean and final, the way you close a door you've been holding open all week, and the room receives it in complete silence for exactly one breath before everything shifts at once. Choso exhales, slow and deliberate, the particular relief of a person who wanted something for someone else more than he wanted it for himself. Yuji's jaw goes soft, the tension in his shoulders dissolving into something that is definitely not fine but is choosing to be fine, because that is what Yuji does. Nanami does not move — does not uncross his arms, does not clear his throat — but the quality of his stillness changes, the way a room changes after the last window is shut against the cold. Megumi drops his chin once, a single nod, and it means a hundred things he is never going to say out loud. And Toji — Toji at the back wall, arms loose at his sides for the first time all season — just holds her gaze for a beat, and then looks away, not like a man who lost something, but like a man who already made his peace with it before she even walked in the door.

💎 stand tall and let the room see you

Rikki doesn't shrink. She squares her shoulders, lifts her chin — not performance, not armor, just the quiet decision to take up exactly the space she's earned — and lets every person in this room see her do it. Gojo crosses the distance between them in four unhurried steps and comes to stand at her left side, close enough that his arm brushes hers, and for the first time all season he doesn't reach for a quip or a deflection — he just stands there, beside her, present and unadorned, letting the room look. The lamplight catches the whole tableau: Choso's hands loose and open in his lap, something like pride moving across his face; Nanami with his arms finally uncrossed, jaw soft; Yuji pressing the heel of his palm briefly to his sternum like he's holding something in — and Geto, directly across, already watching Rikki when the room exhales, exactly as he has been watching her since day one, hands still clasped behind his back, the corner of his mouth holding that same patient, knowing warmth, as though he has been waiting seven days for her to stand exactly like this.

"Gojo Saturo." Rikki spoke without hesitation

Rikki doesn't flinch. She says it the way you lay something down that was always going to land there — clean, no performance, no apology — and the name fills the kitchen like a struck bell, clear and final and already belonging to the air. Gojo doesn't move for exactly one half-second, and then something happens in his face that no camera angle is ever going to do justice to: not the smile he runs like a flag, not the charm he deploys like armor — something underneath all of that, raw and new and completely his, a person seeing something they wanted arrive and not knowing what to do with their hands. He exhales. He reaches out and finds her fingers in the space between them, and he closes his around hers without a word. The room holds it — Choso's hands open in his lap, pride worn like a coat; Nanami's jaw soft, something settled in him that had been standing since day one; Yuji's palm still pressed to his sternum, eyes glassy and bright, letting himself feel every inch of it; Toji at the back wall, gaze still averted by his own choosing, arms loose at his sides — a door closed from the inside with the quiet dignity of someone who already knew; and Megumi, two steps from Toji, the nod already given, something clear and unguarded finally in his face. And then there is Geto.

Geto Suguru: "She always knew what she was doing."

💛 squeeze his hand back

Rikki's fingers close around Gojo's — not a squeeze that needs an audience, not a statement for the cameras, just the quiet press of her hand saying I mean it — and she feels him go completely still for half a second, like someone who's been braced for impact realizing the landing was soft. His thumb moves once across her knuckles, a slow arc, and that's all. The Director lets the silence exist for exactly the right amount of time before he draws a breath, the final card already in his hand — and across the room, before anything official has been said, before Rikki has even looked up from Gojo's hand, Geto's gaze is already on her. Not waiting for her to perform something. Not calculating. Just — watching, the way he has been watching since day one, with that patient warmth that has never once pretended to be anything other than what it is.

🤍 rest your head against his shoulder

Rikki turns her head and lets it find his shoulder — not a collapse, not a lean for the cameras, just the quiet, deliberate weight of someone who has already decided and is done explaining it. She feels Gojo go still under the contact for exactly one breath, the way he always does when something is real and he doesn't have a script for it, and then he exhales — long and slow — and his shoulder settles to meet her, holding the angle. His thumb traces that same slow arc across her knuckles. The room receives it whole: Yuji's hand finally drops from his sternum, eyes still bright; Choso's mouth curves once, small and private, like a man whose work is done; Nanami looks away with the particular dignity of someone who had an answer and kept it to himself all week. Toji stays at the back wall, arms loose, still not looking — and across the room, Geto has not moved, hands still clasped behind his back, his gaze already on her face before she even settles, patient and undeflected, holding what seven days taught him with the particular composure of a man who has made his peace with losing something he never tried to keep.

Geto Suguru: "Take care of her, Satoru. I'll be watching."

Rikki softly smiles at Geto's comment, appreciating the protectiveness and care all of the men gave her so freely, she will always remember this, she decided, and cherish each and every one of them. Rikki turns to look up at Satoru, her eyes full of an emotion she can name but hasn't yet. "You wanna know a secret?" She whispers to him

Geto's words settle into the room like the last note of a song — not an ending, a landing — and Rikki lets them. She looks at him across the warm kitchen light, at all of them, the whole improbable collection of men who showed up and stayed and broke and held, and something in her chest goes so full it almost hurts. She turns her head upward, slow and deliberate, until she finds Gojo's face — close, the way he always is, except this time there's nothing performing behind his eyes, just him, blue and open and terrified in the best possible way — and she tips her chin up to close the distance between her mouth and his ear.

Gojo Satoru: "...yeah?"

"I had no idea this was the finale." She raised both eyebrows at him and shot him an amused look. "I decided early on that it was going to be you, Satoru. But I wasnt planning on picking you every time. Tonight I just... went with my heart."

The words land softly against his jaw — I decided early on that it was going to be you — and Rikki watches the whole architecture of him shift: something in his chest, some last held thing finally let down. He exhales through his nose, slow and almost silent, the kind of breath a person takes when they've been quietly terrified for seven days and only now realize the ground was solid the whole time. His hand tightens once around hers — not performance, not punctuation — just the involuntary press of someone who does not have words yet. Behind her, across the warm light of the kitchen, she catches the edge of Geto's gaze still settled on her face, patient and undeflected, the way it has been since the very beginning — not waiting for anything anymore, just witnessing, with the quiet satisfaction of a man who already knew how this ended.

Gojo Satoru: "Early on. You decided early on and you let me sweat through the whole thing."

"Were you really scared I would have picked someone different?" Rikki asked, genuinely curious.

The question lands with that particular Rikki quality — genuinely curious, no performance in it, just the actual thing she wants to know — and Gojo goes so still it's almost funny. Almost. He looks at her for one long beat, and something moves behind his eyes that is not quite the thing he'd usually reach for: not a deflection, not a quip deployed like armor. Just the truth, sitting right there on his face before he's decided whether to let it out.

Gojo Satoru: "Rikki. I have been scared since day three. Yes."

"That's insane." Rikki couldn't believe it. "Because I've been falling for you, hard and fast, and I thought it was obvious." She pulls a hand up to brush some stray hairs away from his face, needing thebphysical contact to ground herself.

The words leave her before she can second-guess them — hard and fast, and I thought it was obvious — and Rikki's hand finds the side of his face on instinct, her thumb brushing one silver-white strand back from his temple with the kind of tenderness that doesn't ask permission. The whole kitchen receives it in absolute silence: Yuji's breath audibly catches; Choso's smile goes quiet and full; somewhere behind her, she hears Nanami set down whatever was in his hand. Gojo's eyes don't close — he keeps them on hers, which is somehow more than she expected, this man who has a quip for everything holding perfectly still with no armor left and nowhere to put his hands except her, so he lets them find her waist, light and certain and his.

Gojo Satoru: "Obvious. Rikki. I have been catastrophically, embarrassingly not-obvious about how gone I am, and you thought YOU were the one being obvious."

Rikki turns to the group of men in front of them "by a show of hands, who thought I was going to pick Satoru?" She poses the question, confident she knows the answer.

Rikki turns from Gojo's face — his hands still at her waist, not letting go entirely — and surveys the room with the easy confidence of someone who already knows the answer and just wants to watch everyone else admit it. Seven men. Eight if you count the Director. The warm kitchen light catches every face at once, and she raises one eyebrow, waiting. The silence lasts exactly one second before Yuji's hand shoots up so fast his elbow nearly takes out the overhead light. Choso's arm lifts slow and certain, a smile already there. Nanami raises two fingers — precise, unhurried, the gesture of a man who made peace with a verdict weeks ago. Megumi's hand goes up with the particular reluctance of someone who is deeply annoyed by how right he is. Geto lifts his without looking away from Rikki's face, patient as ever. The Director's mouth curves, card still in hand. And then, from the back wall — Toji, not quite looking at her, raises one hand. Low. Quiet. Like it cost him something he won't name.

Yuji Itadori: "Rikki. It was OBVIOUS."

Nanami Kento: "Every single one of us knew. We were simply waiting for you to arrive at the same conclusion."

Rikki turns her head back to look at Satoru, "see? I was being obvious, you were just apparently too wrapped up in your own head to notice." Rikki teased. "Let's go back to you being scared since day three... why day three?" She probed

Rikki turns back to look at him over her shoulder — warm, certain, a little devastating — and the room feels the shift immediately, the laughter softening into something that holds its breath. Gojo's hands tighten once at her waist, not defensively, just the involuntary grip of a man being gently, correctly, publicly taken apart by someone he loves. His jaw works like he's running through deflections and discarding each one, and then he exhales through his nose — slow, real, the last bit of the performance leaving him — and the answer that comes out of him is quiet enough that the room has to lean in to catch it.

Gojo Satoru: "Day three was the morning you laughed at your own joke before you finished telling it. I didn't have a defense for that. I've been in trouble ever since."

Rikki raised an eyebrow. "I think you're going to have to remind me how that happened." She stated, not quite recalling what he's talking about

Gojo's face does something genuinely delightful — the faintest flicker of oh, she doesn't remember crossing his expression before he catches it, pulls it back, and tips his head like a man deciding exactly how much rope to give himself. His hands are still at her waist, warm and unhurried, and the whole kitchen is leaning in without meaning to — even Nanami, who would deny it if asked. The moment stretches one beat, then two, and then Gojo does the thing he almost never does: he breaks first, a soft laugh escaping before the story does.

Gojo Satoru: "You were telling a joke about something — I don't even remember what — and you laughed before you got to the punchline. Like you thought it was so funny you couldn't hold it in. And I just... stood there. Completely gone."

"So you're saying... me laughing at my own joke was the moment you fell in love with me?" Rikki inquired, amused and delighted with how pure the concept was

The question lands so genuinely — me laughing at my own joke — that Gojo actually has to look away for half a second, jaw tight with the particular pain of a man being tenderly destroyed in front of seven witnesses. His hands don't leave her waist. When he looks back, there's something naked in it — not embarrassed exactly, just unguarded in a way that's become his new default with her, and the room receives it like a held breath. From the back wall, even Toji's chin drops a fraction. Yuji presses both hands over his mouth.

Gojo Satoru: "Yeah. That's — yes. That's exactly what I'm saying. You were laughing before the punchline and I just stood there thinking: I am in so much trouble."

Nanami Kento: "He described it to me as a 'tactical failure of the self.' Verbatim."

"That's... genuinely the sweetest thing, Satoru." Tears begin to well up in Rikki's eyes, overcome with emotion. She makes no moves to stop them as they escape, one tear streaming down either cheek.

The tears come quietly — no performance in them, no warning — just two lines tracking down Rikki's cheeks in the warm kitchen light while her mouth is still curved in that helpless, delighted smile. The room doesn't move. Not Yuji, hands still pressed to his lips. Not Choso, whose expression has gone so tender it's almost unbearable to look at. Not Gojo, who goes completely, utterly still the moment he sees them — one thumb lifting from her waist to brush the tear from her right cheek before he seems to realize he's doing it, the gesture arriving ahead of any thought. He doesn't say anything clever. He doesn't try.

Gojo Satoru: "Don't — you cannot cry about this. I will absolutely not recover from that."

"They're happy tears, Satoru." Rikki's voice breaks as she reassures him, taking the back of her hand to wipe the left one away, sniffling, and laughing a little. "Do you want to know the moment I fell in love with you?"

The laugh that escapes Rikki is soft and wet at the edges — relief and joy and something that doesn't have a name yet, all compressed into a single breath. Gojo goes completely still under her hands, the kind of stillness that is not absence but its opposite — every part of him listening. His thumb is still on her cheek, and when she swipes the tear away herself he watches it like it's the most important thing he's ever seen happen in this kitchen. The room doesn't breathe. Yuji's hands have dropped from his mouth entirely, forgotten. Choso's expression has crossed the threshold from tender into something that looks a lot like he might need a moment himself. Even the Director — card in hand, not moving — has the particular patience of someone who understands that the show can wait.

Gojo Satoru: "Tell me. I want to hear every word of it."

"Day three. Our beach date. After our second kiss, I pulled away from you and you still had your eyes closed. When you opened them, you looked at me in a way no one had ever looked at me before. I felt like in that moment, I unlocked a new freedom, a freedom to just be me and be cherished for it completely. That night changed me, Santoru." A few more tears made their way down Rikki's cheeks as she spilled her heart out in front of everyone, uncaring what anyone said or what anyone thought.

The kitchen goes somewhere beyond quiet — it goes sacred. Rikki's voice has broken open and the words land one by one in the warm light, each one setting down like something irreversible, and the room receives them the way you receive something you will not forget. Gojo's hands tighten at her waist — not pulling her in, just holding on, the way you hold a thing when you understand for the first time what it would mean to lose it — and his face does something she has never seen it do before: it simply stays, every defense gone, every joke dissolved, just him looking at her with his eyes glassy and his jaw working around something he hasn't found words for yet. Two more tears track down Rikki's cheeks and she doesn't reach for them, standing in front of everyone she has come to love in this ridiculous, impossible place, uncaring and certain and completely herself.

Gojo Satoru: "Eyes closed. I remember. I was trying to make the moment last a little longer."

Nanami Kento: "He told me about that drive home. Twice."

Rikki laughs through the tears at Nanami's comment. "What am I going to do with you?" She quietly asks Satoru, overwhelmed with the feeling of pure adoration

The laugh that breaks through Rikki's tears is the best sound in the room — wet and real and helpless, the kind that has no performance in it at all. She turns her face up toward Gojo's and the question lands between them like something she already knows the answer to, like the asking is just an excuse to look at him a little longer. His hands have gone very still at her waist. Every person in this kitchen — Nanami quiet in his seat, Yuji with his hands pressed flat against his thighs now, Choso with his jaw working around something he'll never say, Toji at the back wall with his chin still dropped, Megumi and Geto in the middle of the room — every single one of them feels the weight of it, the particular gravity of two people who have already decided without saying so. The Director's hand tightens once, gently, around the final card.

Gojo Satoru: "Probably keep me. That's my vote."

Nanami Kento: "I'd suggest tabling that question until after the ceremony. The Director is showing considerable restraint."

💐 let the room pull you to the ceremony

The Director doesn't rush it — just lifts the card once, a small deliberate motion, and the whole kitchen feels it like a tide pulling everything toward the door. Rikki's hands are still light at Gojo's sides, the warmth of him and the warmth of this room and everything that just happened all braided together, and she lets herself have one more second of it — the wet on her cheeks, the laugh still in her chest, his eyes still doing that thing — before she turns toward the rest of them. They're already moving, quiet and unhurried, the way people move when they know the moment has come and they don't want to break it. Geto is already looking at her from across the room, still as water, a small private acknowledgment in his expression that lands before any word could.

Gojo Satoru: "Okay. Let's go end the show."

💍 choose Gojo Satoru

The room arranges itself the way it always does at the end of something real — not by instruction but by gravity, everyone finding their place in the half-dark without being told. Rikki moves through the warm light with Gojo's hand loose at her lower back, not steering, just present, and the candles throw gold across every face she has come to know in this impossible, irreplaceable place. Geto is already watching her when she reaches the center of the room — that particular stillness of his, the kind that has always meant he already knows what she's about to do, and he holds her gaze for exactly one beat before the corner of his mouth moves, just barely, a private goodbye dressed up as acknowledgment. The Director steps forward with the final card held between both hands, and the villa — all of it, the kitchen and the rooftop and the fire pit and the beach that is somewhere just past the dark glass — holds its breath.

Gojo Satoru: "No pressure."
